Could it be that in 1984 we were so clueless about what Hebrew texts meant? The example above shows it's not just pedantic, but the changes have potential to affect faith and practice for good or evil.

Any clarifications appreciated.Cliff Tannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2082372264562171646.post-42500708989003510192011-08-11T15:57:14.025-04:002011-08-11T15:57:14.025-04:00Cory, I am reading this blog for the first time an...Cory, I am reading this blog for the first time and really enjoy your posts. I am an Atavist and an Open Theist and, when engaged in discussions with Calvinists there definitely seems to be a huge disconnect between the point of the several stories, narratives and choices--any which we may choose to pick and discuss. I'm not claiming to know all the answers; I don't perceive the architects of OT claimed as much either. In the case of the Israelite's and their crossing the Red Sea,it seems to be the point of the story (Divine Revelation) that God had hopes for their entire deliverance into the Land of Milk and Honey. Yet, because of choices made along the way, he had to cut them down and cut them off--almost 100% of them. Only two men from the original crossing walked into the Land God had hoped, but subsequently denied entry. OT grapples with the entire narrative in a much different way than our Calvinist counterparts. And I don't agree that Open Theists are missing the point--Calvinists are.Aristobulushttp://highmileagehermeneutics.blogspot.com/2011/02/what-do-open-theism-and-5-point.htmlnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2082372264562171646.post-7164875160738065592011-08-08T10:33:42.795-04:002011-08-08T10:33:42.795-04:00That's good. He came across as one of the more generous skeptics, offering mild appreciation of the Old Testament Hebrew slavery. And he expressed his disgust towards Dawkins, et. al. All of this surprised me. My primary source for th...Thanks for your comment!

My primary source for the Historical Jesus is the Gospels (all of which were written in the first century and likely before the destruction of the temple in 70 AD). While I would agree that Jesus himself was a first century Jewish sage/teacher, I'm not sure where you are heading. Are you saying that Jesus was a Pharisee? I agree that he was a teacher/rabbi and that he taught the Torah, but I do not think we have enough evidence to dismiss what the Gospels say about Him. Outside of the Gospels, Josephus, and a couple Roman sources we don't have anything on the historical Jesus, and none of these contradict the Gospel account.

On another note... are you familiar with the writings of David Flusser? Glad you posted it. I am against Bell's ideology and yet feel somewhat hypocritical to condemn without reading it first. As he admits, the book is so widely "misunderstood." If so many people misunderstand it, that implies to me that he did a poor job writing the book and I would probably just "misunderstand" him too. I pray that eventually Jennifer Knapp would take this position, as I think she could give a lot of hope to other Christians who are seeking to overcome homosexuality. It's the last sin temptation that anyone wants to confess to (mostly we all just like to confess to pride and other very general sins) and I think it would be hugely freeing for people to honestly admit that they are struggling rather than trying to do it on their own.
I'm thinking I'll get the Kansas CD out and listen to it soon.
