Theology, Reviews & Exegesis for the long haul
As the husband of a complementarian and a student of the NT Greek I can see Burk's point. On the other hand, Doug Moo is a scholar that hold in the highest regard. Truth is Moo and the other translators on the committee are facing a difficult decision. Scholarship isn't just about translating words, but ideas, convictions, and contexts. While I agree with Moo that this passage must be translated carefully, I do not think that "assume" get's at the Greek. It may allow for multiple interpretations (which suits our western ideologies), but I think it will misrepresent the Greek to those who will read "assume" as not having gone through the proper ecclesiastical channels... that's not the meaning here.
